Community Curating Exhibition – Sitka: Paris of the Pacific Then & Now Application and Submission Guidelines

Sitka Historical Society invites Sitkans to apply to take part in our Community Curating Exhibit, Sitka: Paris of the Pacific, Then & Now. This exhibit will focus on how Sitka, as a result of the international maritime fur trade, was one of the most urban settlements on the Northwest Coast; how its infrastructure, international flair and influence, opulence, refinement and culture earned it the 19th century distinction of being the “Paris of the Pacific”; and how Sitka with its present-day dynamic community, innumerable nonprofits, and vibrant arts and cultural scene, has lived up to its title in modern times.
Three Ways to Participate
- Submit for inclusion in the exhibit a three dimensional object, piece of memorabilia, archival items such as a menu, brochure or flyer, piece of writing or other kind of piece in a different format.
- Apply to perform (read, act, dance, or play music) at the opening reception the evening of October 9th at the Sitka Historical Museum.
- Apply to be on the Community Panel to review and select submissions included in the exhibit/opening reception. This panel will meet for up to two and a half hours in the late afternoon on Thurs., Sept. 27th.
Entry Instructions
Complete Entry Form below. Each entry submitted must be submitted with its own Entry Form. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
Entry Guidelines
1. Deadline: September 26th
2. Multiple Entries: Applicants may submit up to five items
3. Photo Format: Photos must be submitted in electronic format (jpeg or tiff files only at minimum DPI of 400) to curator@sitkahistory.org If you do NOT have an electronic file of your photo, please have your photo scanned at Harry Race’s. If you are unable to have your photo scanned at Harry’s, please contact the museum to arrange for an in-house scan.
4. Performance Submissions: If applying to perform (dance, play music or act) at the opening reception, you must submit a video demo of your performance. If possible, submit the demo electronically to curator@sitkahistory.org
5. Reading Submissions: If you are applying to either read a piece of your writing at the opening reception or have it included in the exhibition, you must submit a copy of the work you intend to read.
5. Rights: SHS reserves the non-exclusive right to exhibit/ use submissions for marketing/promotional purposes.
6. Opening Reception: Applicants whose submissions are selected will be notified and should plan to attend the opening reception for Sitka: Paris of the Pacific, Then & Now on Oct. 9th at 5:30pm at the Sitka Historical Museum.
7. People applying to take part in the Community Member Panel should apply AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and must be available to review submissions for up to two and a half hours the late afternoon of Thurs., September 27th

- SHS has non-exclusive rights to exhibit/use/ publish the submission/recording of performance on its web site/Face Book page or in publications for marketing and educational uses.

- I agree to save and hold harmless SHS from any liability related to use or ownership of any item/piece I submit.
- SHS is not responsible for the health or safety of the individuals who submit/perform at the opening, their companions or property during any participation activities related to the exhibition or opening reception or receptions held during the course of the exhibition.
- I understand that entries that fail to comply with the Submission Guidelines will be disqualified.
